Criminals don’t act randomly. Most predators give off red flags before they attack. Are you spotting or missing the ominous clues?
What Criminals Want
- Power and control over a victim.
- An easy target—someone distracted, timid, or unaware.
- Quick success with little risk of getting caught.
Their biggest weapon? Surprise.
Tactics Criminals Use
- Bold aggression: Attacking anyone next to them who is unaware. (This is an example of someone who is mentally unstable or a stalker.)
- Boundary testing: Ignoring your “no,” standing too close, or asking small favors to see if you comply.
- Distraction: Using charm, conversation, or questions to shift your focus.
- Isolation in fringe areas: Waiting until you’re alone in places like parking lots, restrooms, streets or walking paths.
Red Flag Signals
Predators often give themselves away. Watch for:
Staring: The single most ominous sign, they lock onto you or the item they want.
Repeated unwanted attention after setting a boundary, like following you.
Overly friendly behavior or forced flattery. Ask yourself why a stranger is being so nice to you. What do they want from you? Being skeptical is healthy in this scenario.
“Testing” your reactions to see if you push back or stay passive.
Asking questions to distract you.
Ominous Body Language Before an Attack
Criminals often reveal intent through physical cues. Know these warning signs:
- Unblinking stares: Someone constantly staring at you gives you an uneasy feeling (pay attention to this).
- Clenched fists or jaw: Tension that signals aggression.
- Facial signs: Furrowed brows or squinting eyes.
- Feet tell the truth: If they claim they’re leaving but their feet still point at you, they’re lying.
- Hidden hands: Hands in pockets or behind the back may conceal a weapon or signal evil intent.
- Restless movements before a telltale attack.
- A person who is arguing and very angry suddenly falls silent. A physical strike often follows this.
Remember, the eyes give away the target, but the hands do the harm.
How to Outsmart Them
- Profile anyone in your area on their strange behavior or if something seems “off” to you: For example, if you’re on public transportation, scan the area and sit next to a woman or a man who is dressed as if they are going to work. Preferably, sit against a wall or stand, and avoid having your back to someone.
- Trust your instincts: don’t second-guess that gut feeling.
- Project confidence: Stand tall, make brief, solid eye contact with others to show them you are aware (the video below explains exactly how to make strong eye contact). If they continue to move toward you and ignore your stern voice, then put one hand in your pocket and blade your body to show strong body language.
- Stay alert: Limit phone use and scan your surroundings. Avoid wearing AirPods or headphones, as they can distract you and cloud your senses and intuitive feelings.
- Have a plan: Know exit strategies at all times. Carry a defensive tool like REPULS Defense Spray, which can be used in public transportation without affecting others.
The Takeaway
Criminals count on distraction and surprise. By following these strategies, you can prevent being targeted by criminals in everyday situations. Awareness in public + training + proactive safety mindset = a safe, empowered lifestyle.
